John Louis Petit (also known as The Reverend John Louis Petit; 31 May 1801 - 1 December 1868) was an artist and architectural historian whose paintings of buildings and landscapes, almost exclusively in watercolour, complemented his activities as one of the mid-19th century's leading writers and speakers on ecclesiastical architecture.

John Louis Petit was descended from the Huguenot family of Petit des Etans from Caen in Normandy, and would prove to be its last male representative. The clock-tower acts as an entrance gate to the part of the town that historians call "the 15th century area". Dating back to the 12th century, the tower was razed to the ground during a French invasion under Louis XIV in 1676. What can be admired today is a reconstruction by the people of Taormina in 1679, who added a large clock to the tower.
